Technology is a wonderful tool for helping your graduate program to:
Civil and Environmental Engineering: We believe that our graduate student blog at http://uiuccee.typepad.com/gradblog/ has been a great success. This is an effective way to communicate with graduate students about a variety of important matters, including new course offerings, seminars, fellowship and award opportunities, job postings, Ph.D. Final Examinations, deadlines, etc. The blog is also a portal to an array of useful web sites on career advice, research ethics, mentoring, etc., including appropriate links to the Graduate College.
Electrical and Computer Engineering: With about 500 students, we have had to find efficient methods for handling processes such as admissions and tracking progress to degree and for providing efficient transfer of important information to students and faculty. We rely heavily on web-based database tools developed by ECE IT personnel and our tools for providing web portal for faculty and students for tracking application and admissions and for maintaining grad student records (my dot) have now spread to many units across campus.
Kinesiology and Community Health: We have recently implemented an online graduate student file review process that provides faculty members with a rapid and efficient means for evaluating applications to the graduate program.
