Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) announces the search for a 50% FTE graduate assistant (GA) to assist in the administrative needs of the LAS James Scholar Honors program. The LAS Honors program provides support for students’ academic achievement and campus engagement through their participation in the program’s portfolio, which allows students to track a series of academic and enrichment experiences throughout their time in the program.

This position will serve the increasing needs of the LAS Honors program in maintaining the portfolio and developing a more efficient and effective assessment of experiences. The graduate assistant will also work directly with Honors students for student publications, walk-in advising, and in a support role in recruitment and scholarship review, as well as verify theses for the College of LAS repository system.


Reporting directly to the Associate Director, the graduate assistant (GA) will assist in the following responsibilities:

·       Maintain the LAS Honors portfolio system (15%)

o   Review submissions of all LAS Honors students regarding their end-of- semester Honors activities; award points for properly documented activities

o   Review validity of all Honors Experience Request forms regarding plans for community service, internships, research, conference presentations, etc., for proper documentation, descriptions, and contact information; contact students as needed for more information

·       Oversee the publication of Honorable Mentions, the biweekly Honors enewsletter (20%)

o   Supervise LAS Honors media interns and coordinate intern writing assignments

o   Edit and publish newsletter via Webtools

o   Oversee the LAS Honors social media presence, including senior spotlights on Facebook

·       Assess the LAS Honors program activities (20%)

o   Gather quantitative and qualitative data from end-of-semester honors experience surveys and assess data according to LAS Honors outcomes

o   Present information to Associate Director in regular and ongoing discussions of assessment goals

o   Provide data analysis of LAS Honors Recruitment and Admissions, including

test-based admissions versus test-blind admissions in LAS Honors

o   Offer recommendations for improvement regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in Honors recruitment and admissions based upon R+A data

·       Advise students for walk-in Honors advising (20%)

o   Main areas include understanding Honors portfolio system, policies, eligibility, progress, and successful attainment of Good Academic Standing in Honors program

o   Using a strengths-based approach, help students identify academic and engagement opportunities and guide them through reflection and assessment of their qualifications

o   Document all interactions with students in UGradRecs

o   Refer students to academic, personal, and/or career campus resources

·       Review Thesis submissions for College of LAS (5%)

o   Use checklist to verify submissions have required materials

·       Attend LAS Honors staff meetings (5%)

·       Assist with recruitment activities (5%)

o   Help to organize, set up, attend, and gather/analyze data on recruitment events

·       Assist with other duties for LAS Honors program as needed (5%)

o   Assist with undergraduate intern application, interview, and selection process

o   Serve as reviewer for Preble Research scholarship as needed

o   Other miscellaneous tasks as needed

·       Provide weekly activity reports to Associate Director of LAS Honors (5%)

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·       Candidate must be a graduate student in good standing in a College of LAS graduate program at UIUC

·       Commitment to working with students from culturally diverse backgrounds

·       Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

·       Ability to work collaboratively and on a self-directed basis

·       Proficiency with Microsoft Office

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·       Proficiency in the use of Banner, Degree Audits System and Webtools

·       Familiarity with the College of LAS and the LAS Honors program

·       Experience with assessment and/or data analysis

·       Experience with newsletter or social media writing or editing

·       Experience teaching, advising, or mentoring undergraduate students

·       Previous work in an academic resource office

Compensation

At least $2,055.56 (monthly) – 50% employee/20 hours per week
