Your doctoral degree represents the culmination of years of commitment, dedication, and work. We hope that you’ll join us to celebrate of all that you’ve accomplished, surrounded by the family, friends, and colleagues who helped you succeed.
Graduates and hooding faculty will process into Foellinger Great Hall in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and the ceremony will include comments from campus leaders and Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, Dean of the Graduate College. Deans from each college and school will be present to congratulate students on their achievements. The focus of the ceremony is the formal "hooding" of doctoral degree recipients, often by faculty advisers. Students are invited to participate in this ceremony in addition to the university-wide Commencement ceremony and unit convocations. The event will be livestreamed for family and friends who are unable to attend the ceremony in person. Livestreaming details will be added closer to the event.
Doctoral students (PhD, EdD, JSD, DMA and AudD) are eligible to participate in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony if will finish the degree requirements for May 2018. Participants must have deposited their dissertations in the Graduate College Thesis Office by the May doctoral deposit deadline (5 p.m. on Friday, April 20) in order to participate in the ceremony.
Registration will be open from March 1 - April 30.
Designate a Hooder
Students will be asked to designate a hooder during the registration process. This person is often the student's adviser, another faculty member, or perhaps a family member. This person must have an earned doctorate. Please confirm that this person is willing to participate before completing the registration form. The deadline to designate a hooder is April 6. Students who have not designated a hooder will be hooded by a member of the platform party.
In order to accommodate all participants, graduates are allowed up to 8 guest tickets. Requests for additional tickets can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org and will be accommodated as space is available.
Tickets will be distributed after the dissertation deposit is complete. Tickets will be available starting April 23 in 110 Coble Hall between 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday.
If your guest(s) require any special accommodations, please specify those needs on the registration page under the optional information heading. Graduates and hooding faculty do not need tickets.
Regalia can be ordered until April 12, 2018. Regalia can be ordered online from Herff Jones or by visiting the Author's Corner in the Illini Union Bookstore on April 12 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. On the Herff Jones ordering site, select "Rent a Cap and Gown" and then "Doctoral Hooding Ceremony" to order regalia for this ceremony. [If you are unsure of your plans at this time, but are considering participating in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony, please order academic attire. You will not be charged the rental fee if academic attire is not picked up during the distribution period.]
If you are interested in purchasing regalia, an on-campus ordering session will be held February 21, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the Author’s Corner in the Illini Union Bookstore.

To participate in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony, please note the following deadlines:
Last day to apply for May degree conferral (adding your name to the degree list) on Student Self-Service.
Last day for designating a hooder. Designating a hooder is optional.
Last day to place an order to rent student regalia from Herff Jones (10:00 p.m. Central Time).
Last day to deposit dissertation in the Graduate College Thesis Office.
