The effects of environmental toxicants on early embryonic development in mice

Mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), is a metabolized form of Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) which is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that is known to alter normal reproductive function. Humans and other organisms are exposed to DEHP daily. So, it is important to know at what amount of DEHP intake we will begin to display ill effects on our bodies. Mercury is a heavy metal that is also a toxin commonly found in the environment, causing several adverse effects to the body, even being potentially fatal. These toxins are known to be (EDCs), which are chemicals that interfere with normal hormonal responses. MEHP and mercury are known reproductive toxins. However, knowledge of the effects of environmentally and occupationally relevant doses of these toxins on early embryo development is limited. This study will investigate whether one-celled embryos from female CD-1 mice, exposed to MEHP and methylmercury will show altered normal embryonic development from a polar body to the blastocyst hatching stage.
