Graduate School Exploration Program / SROP

Summer Research Opportunities Program

Dates: June 1 - July 31, 2020

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers a summer research program that provides undergraduate students from populations underrepresented in graduate study at Illinois with an opportunity to explore careers in research. The program at Illinois provides students with an experience that will help strengthen their knowledge, skills, and understanding of graduate school. Since 1986, Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at Illinois has brought talented undergraduate students from across the US and its territories, such as Puerto Rico, to our campus as an introduction to graduate study, research, and the admission process.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on our campus we have modified our 2020 Illinois SROP programming to provide a new Graduate School Exploration Program. We will offer this program to students who have been accepted to the Illinois SROP. This program will include a series of synchronous and asynchronous online seminars. The dates of the Graduate School Exploration Program will run from June 15 - July 31 and students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Admission Test Prep 101 that will take place from June 1 - June 15.

Grad Exploration Seminar Series

Graduate Exploration will offer a series of webinars that expose students to various aspects of Graduate School. Topics will include: Financing Graduate Education & Research, Applying to Graduate School, CV vs. Résumé, and The Personal Statement.

Admission test prep 101

The Admission Test Prep 101 will familiarize participants with the types of questions asked and the strategies used when taking the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) general test. Participants will receive training on each of the three sections of the test. This program will begin on June 1, 2020 and end on June 15, 2020. Additionally, participants will be given an opportunity to take a pre- and post-test to measure their skill in taking the test, as well as knowledge in each of the three sections.
