Advancing your Workforce Through Doctoral Education and Research
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites industry partners to collaborate in a model of doctoral education ideally positioned to advance the research, innovation, and workforce development goals of leading organizations.
The Industry-Aligned PhD model creates a structured pathway for companies to engage directly with Illinois faculty, research, and graduate education. Through this model, organizations can invest in the development of highly skilled talent while addressing complex, real-world challenges aligned with their strategic priorities.
Illinois is uniquely positioned to support this effort through its nationally recognized STEM programs, interdisciplinary research strengths, and long-standing commitment to excellence in doctoral education.
Why Partner with Illinois?
Companies are increasingly seeking employees with deep technical expertise, research capability, and the ability to translate discovery into application. The Industry-Aligned PhD model offers a way to build that capacity from within your organization while also connecting directly with top doctoral talent.
Through this partnership, companies can develop and retain high-potential employees through advanced doctoral training while engaging with cutting-edge research aligned with their strategic priorities. The model creates opportunities to build sustained relationships with Illinois faculty and research programs, while also providing access to a pipeline of highly trained PhD graduates prepared to contribute in industry settings from day one.
Two Pathways for Engagement
Two flexible pathways allow companies to engage in ways that align with workforce and research needs.
1. PhD Pathway for Current Employees
Companies may support current employees in pursuing a PhD while continuing their employment. Employees enroll in an Illinois doctoral program and complete degree requirements, dedicating a portion of their time to academic study and research while remaining available and engaged, as needed, with their current job responsibilities and projects. In many cases, an employee’s Ph.D. research will align with their work for the company.
This pathway allows organizations to invest in the long-term development of key employees, steer doctoral research towards areas of strategic importance, and retain talent while strengthening advanced technical and research capabilities within the company.
2. Industry-Embedded PhD Students
Companies may host Illinois PhD students in structured, multi-term industry experiences that extend beyond traditional internships. These engagements provide sustained exposure to company environments, guide dissertation research toward important unsolved industry challenges, and provide advanced recruiting opportunities for the top emerging talent each year.
This pathway allows organizations to work closely with top doctoral students on relevant research challenges, evaluate potential future hires in a meaningful and extended setting, and contribute to shaping the training of the next generation of PhD talent.
Investment and Support
Industry partners provide financial support for participating students, including stipend, tuition, and benefits. This support ensures that students can fully engage in their doctoral training while contributing to areas of importance to the company.
Flexible approaches are available to align with organizational needs. Companies may choose to maintain employees on payroll while providing dedicated time for doctoral study, or they may provide fellowship or stipend-based support for participating students. In all cases, multi-year commitments are structured to align with the duration of doctoral training.
All financial arrangements are implemented through established university processes, with guidance provided by the Graduate College to ensure clarity and efficiency.
Maintaining Academic Excellence
The Industry-Aligned PhD model is designed to maintain the highest standards of academic rigor while enabling meaningful collaboration with industry.
All students are admitted through standard Illinois admissions processes, and all degree requirements, examinations, and dissertation expectations remain unchanged. Faculty retain full responsibility for academic oversight and evaluation.
This ensures that every participant earns a PhD that reflects the same level of excellence and rigor for which the University of Illinois is recognized globally.
Intellectual Property and Research Collaboration
Illinois works closely with industry partners to establish clear agreements regarding intellectual property and research expectations prior to the start of each collaboration.
These agreements are developed in coordination with the university’s Office of Technology Management and are designed to protect the interests of both the company and the university while enabling appropriate use of research findings. At the same time, they ensure that students are able to complete and publish their work in a manner consistent with doctoral requirements.
A Seamless Partnership Experience
Illinois is committed to making participation in the Industry-Aligned model clear, efficient, and impactful for industry partners.
Standardized agreement templates help streamline the development of partnerships, while the Graduate College provides guidance on funding and administrative processes. Academic units work directly with partners to align research and training goals, ensuring that each collaboration reflects both academic excellence and organizational relevance.
In addition to the Graduate College, the Office for Professional Education coordinates shorter-term certificate programs that allow employees to catch up on recent innovations and explore new areas beyond their prior degree work. These certificate programs are also stackable toward graduate degrees, including I-PhD programs, allowing employers and employees to test the waters before committing time and resources toward a full degree.
Building the Future Workforce Together
The Industry-Aligned PhD model represents a new approach to doctoral education that strengthens the connection between research and real-world impact. By partnering with Illinois, organizations can play a direct role in shaping the next generation of PhD-trained talent while advancing their own innovation and workforce objectives.
This is an opportunity to move beyond traditional engagement and toward a sustained partnership that builds capability, accelerates discovery, and strengthens long-term competitiveness.
