Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications
The Graduate Assistant assists with the daily operations of the Center for Children’s Books and supports the research activities of the Center’s director, assistant director, and affiliates under the supervision of the Center’s assistant director. Specific duties of this position include:
- Provide technical and support services
- Manage small collection of children’s and young adult literature, including organizing books, shelving, and promotion
- Create promotional material
- Publicize programs and activities
- Create posts and manage social media accounts, the Center’s calendar of events, and the Center’s website
- Staff the CCB reading room and assist students and patrons
- Assist with events
In addition to working with the CCB director and assistant director, the GA interacts with the Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books Editor and Editorial Assistant and the Social Sciences, Health and Education Library.
Qualifications:
Required: Enrollment in the MSLIS degree program in the School of Information Sciences and residency in the Champaign-Urbana area. Skills in web design (WordPress), social media, and competency in software programs (Outlook, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office), attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication, flexibility, and creativity.
Desirable: Interest in youth librarianship; experience creating displays and/or digital exhibits for libraries; background in the humanities or social sciences; and knowledge of children’s literature.
Compensation
The university has a set stipend rate for Graduate Assistants that is negotiated with the Graduate Employee Organization (GEO). The 2025-2026 stipend was $24,200 for nine months ($2,688.89 monthly).
