Description and Qualifications

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites applications for teaching assistant (TA) positions in the Korean Language Program for Spring 2027.  Appointments will be at 33% or 41%, with the possibility of renewal contingent upon teaching performance and funding availability.

The position will begin January 1, 2027, and extend to May 15, 2027. The successful applicant must be available before the start of the spring semester for orientation and class preparation.

Applicants should meet the following qualifications:

• Be enrolled in a graduate program at UIUC. Priority will be given to students in master’s programs within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) and students in PhD programs at UIUC. Students pursuing master’s degrees in other UIUC colleges are also welcome to apply.
• Have native or near-native fluency in Korean and native or near-native proficiency in English.
• Applicants whose native language is not English must submit with their application a qualifying score on an accepted English proficiency assessment at the time of application, such as the TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, or Oral English Assessment Interview (OEAI), to be considered for a teaching assistantship in Spring 2027.
• Teaching experience in higher education is highly desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Attend the Campus TA Orientation in January (required for first-time TAs).
• Assist with the in-person UIUC Korean placement/proficiency tests in January 2027.
• Teach a Korean language course four or five days per week, depending on the appointment percentage.
• Grade assignments, quizzes, and exams.
• Attend biweekly TA meetings.
• Assist with the Korean Language Program’s Korean Speech Contest in March 2027 as part of the assigned TA workload.
