Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) Honors program announces the search for a 50% FTE (20 hours weekly) graduate teaching assistant (TA) to assist in the instructional needs of the LAS James Scholar Honors program. The LAS Honors program provides a first-year experience course called LAS 122: Leadership & Society, in which all incoming first year honors students in the College of LAS must complete.

This TA will work directly with the Honors Staff on the creation of the LAS 122 course, the facilitation and oversight of all sections of LAS 122 in the fall of 2024, and the facilitation and oversight of the honors section of LAS 399 in the spring of 2025.

Reporting directly to the Director, the teaching assistant (TA) will assist in the following responsibilities:

  • Assist in the facilitation of LAS 122: Leadership & Society
    • Work with honors staff to create/update weekly lesson plans
    • Oversee undergraduate interns as they provide office hours for LAS 122 students
    • Assist in updating Canvas (LMS) for weekly student use, including grading
    • Facilitate and lead weekly intern trainings on Thursday evenings
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners on the Service-Learning Project
    • Communicate Service-Learning Project objectives and tasks to students and interns
    • Facilitate the Service-Learning Project introduction and post-service reflection discussion
  • Assist in the facilitation of LAS 399: Leadership & Professional Development
    • Set-up the interview and hiring process for the fall 2025 LAS 122 interns
    • Work with the honors staff to update the syllabus and create/update weekly lesson plans
    • Facilitate weekly class meetings in the second eight-weeks of the spring 2025 term
    • Assist in updating the Canvas (LMS) for weekly student use, including grading
  • Assist with recruitment activities in relation to LAS 122 and 399
    • Attend spring meet and greet recruitment events
    • Assist in LAS 122 summer registration materials and process oversight
  • Serve as a Reviewer for Preble Research Award and other LAS scholarships as needed
  • Provide weekly activity reports to Director of LAS Honors

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidate must be in good standing in a graduate program at UIUC
  • Commitment to working with students from culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and on a self-directed basis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Experience teaching undergraduate students
  • Experience in hiring, training, and supervising undergraduate students
  • Familiarity with the College of LAS and the LAS Honors program
  • Previous work in an academic resource office

Compensation

APPOINTMENT TERMS:

Length: Academic year (9-month) appointment potentially renewable for subsequent semesters upon mutual interest

Tentative Starting Date: August 16, 2024

Stipend: $2,453.33 per month for a 50% (20 hours per week) appointment

50% appointment for tuition waiver eligible applicants (Master’s students in a College of LAS program or Doctoral students in the College of LAS or College of Education program preferred).
