Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications

Grainger First-Year Experience (GFX) is seeking a collaborative, organized, and detail-oriented on-campus graduate student to support coordination of GFX programming. The individual hired for this position is supervised by the GFX Associate Director to complete assigned tasks that support the unit’s mission. This position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to work in an environment that can be collaborative as well as self-directed. There may be opportunities to work on additional small projects as well.

GFX serves over 2,500 new first-year and transfer undergraduate engineering students at Illinois. Summer programming includes New Student Registration (NSR) for all new first-year and transfer students. Curricular programming includes orientation courses and experiential learning opportunities and events.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Assist GFX Associate Director with coordination of ENG 100, 101, and 300 orientation courses, to include reviewing and updating curriculum, revising assignments, and creating Canvas templates for multiple courses 
  • Assist GFX staff with creating and updating daily New Student Registration (NSR) rosters, communicate regularly with Academic Advisors about roster details and schedule changes, and resolve unanticipated issues with student registration and attendance 
  • Collaborate with GFX staff to refine NSR training materials for advisors, student employees, and programming for new first-year and transfer students 
  • Support GFX staff with data collection and analysis of programming and events 
  • Occasionally support after hour and weekend events 
  • Meet regularly with supervising GFX Associate Director and staff

Minimum Qualifications:   

  • Currently enrolled on-campus graduate student in engineering, education, or a related field 
  • Must be able to dedicate 20 hours per week during regular business hours Monday-Friday, with the possibility of occasional weekend and after hour commitments. Preference will be given to candidates available to continue work on-campus in the summer. 
  • Must be in good academic standing and uphold University Code of Conduct and Student Code

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills 
  • Excellent attention to detail 
  • Ability to problem-solve and make sound judgements in a fast-paced environment 
  • Adaptability 
  • Understanding of University of Illinois policies and procedures 
  • Familiarity with student academic, professional, and personal campus resources 
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Suite, Canva, and Canvas

 

Compensation

This position is a 50% graduate assistantship appointment.
