Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications

DescriptionThe Graduate Assistant(s) coordinate and present career planning workshops and assist with campus outreach programs and events throughout the academic year.Duties:
  • Coordinate and facilitate career planning workshops throughout the academic year
  • Design, promote, and present workshops and programs in support of campus outreach
  • Collect and summarize student data for semester reports, conduct program evaluations, and recommend presentation and program modifications
  • Design and develop innovative methods to reach students
  • Perform 5 hours each week of career drop-in advising (CDA) 
  • Provide one-on-one resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and personal statement reviews to students
  • Coach students on career exploration and job/internship search strategies, individually and in groups
  • Assist with the coordination and planning of events and fairs, including recruiting and managing volunteers for events
  • Utilize online/virtual delivery platforms to deliver content and interact with students
  • Collaborate with The Career Center staff and other campus partners
  • Meet regularly with supervising Assistant Director
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director
QualificationsEducation:Enrolled as a graduate student with career and academic goals that align with the field of higher education, student affairs, student services, or human resources, in an eligible academic graduate program (https://grad.illinois.edu/files/pdfs/handbook.pdf) Desired Experience & Skills:
  • Experience working with diverse groups of students; knowledge and appreciation of cultural differences
  • Exceptional leadership, organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
  • Experience developing and/or presenting programs or workshops
  • Experience with information technology, including use of online resources and presentation software
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional weekends, ability to balance assistantship duties with coursework/class schedule
  • Knowledge of career planning resources and activities is preferred
 

Compensation

CompensationCommensurate with current University of Illinois policies on graduate student stipends and waivers.This position may be funded through the federal work-study program, which is a type of financial aid. The successful candidate is expected to complete a FAFSA application for the corresponding academic year, if eligible, which may be accessed at www.fafsa.ed.gov to determine eligibility for the federal work study program.
