Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Programs

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs are conducted in the summer and designed to allow undergraduate students to participate in research-related activities. Most REUs offer students a fellowship stipend. Participants actively engage in the research process but are not required to produce deliverables for a particular research grant.  Starting in January, 2015 and evolving over subsequent years, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has developed the policies and procedures outlined in this packet to guide REU program set up and payment of participants. Following these policies and procedures not only ensures compliance with NSF guidelines, which are required of any programming receiving NSF funding, but also protects all parties from liability risks.

Please note: If a participant is under age 18 at the time of the research experience, most forms will require the signature of a parent or legal guardian. It is the lab’s responsibility to check the participants’ ages via passport, driver’s license, or birth certificate.
