Dental Insurance Coverage

Graduate Students with Waiver-generating Appointments

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign provides dental insurance for graduate students holding waiver-generating assistantship or fellowship appointments at no additional cost. To find out if your appointment qualifies, please consult the Graduate College Handbook.

The dental insurance provider is UnitedHealthcare StudentResources (UHCSR). 

Students with waiver-generating appointments are automatically enrolled in the custom plan upon the completion of their appointment papers. Please note the coverage start and end dates when scheduling dental appointments.

Coverage Periods

  • For students with a waiver-generating appointment beginning in the fall term, the coverage can be found here.
  • Students with waiver-generating appointments beginning in the spring or summer term can be enrolled in the dental plan if they satisfy a qualifying life event as described in the plan.

  • The rate for a graduate student with a waiver-generating appointment is $0.

Students with Waiver-generating Appointments who wish to enroll Dependents

Students with waiver-generating appointments may also voluntarily enroll dependents (spouse, domestic partner, or children) for coverage in the custom plan.

  • Fall - the enrollment period can be found here

All Other Graduate and Undergraduate Students (and their Dependents)

All other graduate and undergraduate students can voluntarily enroll themselves and their dependents in the voluntary dental and/or vision insurance plan by paying the annual premium. Students wishing to voluntarily enroll must do so during the Enrollment/Change Period.
